In the northern District of Corozal, there is a town which is also, called Corozal. Here is a little resort with its own private beach overlooking the Mayan ruins of Cerros.
Historic Cerros in its days of glory, so long ago, was the most important trading center on the Caribbean for the entire, Maya Nation of Central America.
The Yucatan, Cancun and Cozumel in Mexico are located, a short distance up the Belize coast.
Cancun is highly developed with large resort hotels crowding the beaches. Belize is not like
Cancun and has no high rise hotels, and not as populated or as commercial.
Reference the map below, and locate the towns of Corozal and Orange Walk.
Not far from Orange Walk, the restored Maya ruin called "Lamanai" expresses
its former importance in its imposing and spectacular architecture.
"Altun Ha" is another Mayan ruin that is nearby, present day, town of Orange Walk.
A few days will be used to explore this area. For a detailed Map of Belize click here.
Please note that this large map may take time to download to your computer.
"Crooked Tree" Wildlife Sanctuary and the "Baboon Sanctuary" will be visited, and on another day, the Belize Zoo
and the small, capital city of Belmopan, located inland.
Go on to see the ancient Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech and the imposing, second highest Mayan complex in Central America, called Xunantunich. Its name is not pronounced the way it appears.
Upon seeing Xunantunich for the first time, some archaeology enthusiasts are left speechless at the size and impressive architecture built by the ancient Mayans. By the second week, you will have travelled across half the territory of Belize.
The next day trip will bring you south from your hotel, to see different geography then experienced up to now.
You will visit the small town of Dangriga, "Cockscomb Basin" Wildlife Sanctuary and on to "Placentia" with miles of uncrowded, beaches stretching to the horizon.
You return to your hotel before the sun sets in Belize. Evenings are to relax and be on your own.
PersonalTours® would have provided helpful suggestions and restaurant recommendations.
The next day would be more strenuous, compared to your experience, up to now.
You will be going into the Maya Mountains which are about 4000' at their highest point.
The air-conditioned, sedanvan would take you there comfortably but expect some walking.
With government permits, you will see an archaeological dig at Caracol. This Mayan Site is much larger and impressive than Tikal in Guatemala. Does a "side trip" to Tikal sound interesting?
The next day, travel south again, and past, now, familiar territory. Destination is "Punta Gorda", a very small, town in the south end of Belize. From Punta Gorda, venture into the foothills to see the Mayan ruin sites of "Lubaantun" and "Nim Li Punit". Another full day outing can be planned, in a place, called Belize that time forgot!
It is clear that day trips are packed with varied activities, exploring the rain forest, mountain
pine forest, plains, lowlands, wildlife sanctuaries and the very many, ancient Maya ruins. Click here for a smaller Map of Belize
The Mayan ruins of Belize are the oldest in all of Central America. Exploring this country, and the discovery is fantastic through unspoiled and beautiful Belize. By the way, the Belize International Airport is located 25 minutes from Belize City.
